We train in enclosed waters. Boats tipping over are a rare occurrence and are usually the result of human error whilst on the boat. For this reason it is important that the team listen to the coaches who are experienced in seating the boat for best balance as well as racing potential.
Always be ready to hear and heed an instruction.
The following safety tips will assist in safe dragonboating, in particular for new paddlers.
Before you get into the boat the Coach will talk you through what to expect at a typical training session. General safety tips will be covered.
In addition, always;
Advise the Coaches and Captain of your swimming ability.
Ensure that coaches are aware if you have any injuries or special requirements.
Always take water with you to avoid dehydration.
Safety vests are not provided however you are welcome to provide and wear your own.
Listen to the coaches at all times and follow instructions. Ask about calls / commands that you are not familiar with during training sessions.
For safety reasons, please refrain from excessive banter on the boat as this can restrict the ability of the coaches to be heard. Please show respect for the coaches and the other paddlers by being ready to listen for instructions at all times, and by seating as instructed.
You will be seated beside another paddler who will be your buddy. Ensure you know their name, so that in the event the boat tips over you can account for your buddy. If you can not locate your buddy, the sweep needs to be informed.
